It is an often repeated meme in tech lore that VHS one the VCR format war because of its willingness to produce adult content.
In an article on the site Stack Exchange (VHS vs Betamax: How influential was adult content in the format war?)[1], this myth was debunked:
- FACT: Porn was available on Betamax
- FACT: There was a lot more porn produced on VHS than Betamax
- It also appears that the porn is only a fraction of the market of video sales and rentals and therefore couldn't have been the key influencer.
