From Proto-Indo-European *weyk- (“to choose, separate out, set aside as holy, consecrate, sacrifice”), same source as Proto-Germanic *wīhą (“sacred place or thing”) (Gothic 𐍅𐌴𐌹𐌷𐍃 (weihs)) and English witch.
