Rough sex is wild, energetic sexual intercourse. Bites, scratches, bleeding, and bruising are not an uncommon result. Rough sex may also occur during misogynistic/misandristic sex or other alternative fetishes, such as humiliation, spitting, choking, urinating or slapping, although one can have rough sex without also engaging in such practices.

Although rough sex may appear violent, it is not rape or sexual assault. While rough sex is consensual, rape and sexual assault are not. Consent is the prime distinction. However, it may not be possible to legally give consent to certain activities in certain jurisdictions; see the Operation Spanner case for an example of this in the UK.
