Vulva
From The Art and Popular Culture Encyclopedia
"Ham Carvel, a jealous old doctor, being in bed with his wife , dreamed that the Devil gave him a ring , which, so long as he had it on his finger, would prevent his being made a cuckold: waking he found he had got his finger the Lord-knows-where. See Rabelais, and Prior's versification of the story." --A Classical Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue (1811) by Francis Grose |

The external genital organs of the female are collectively known as the vulva (plural vulvae). In common speech, the term vagina is often used to refer to the vulva or female genitals generally, although, strictly speaking, the vagina is a specific internal structure, whereas the vulva is the exterior genitalia. The human vulva is similar in structure than other mammals.
