The Weimar Republic governed Germany from 1918 to 1933. This period of German history is often called the Weimar period. The republic was named after the city of Weimar, where a national assembly convened to produce a new constitution for the German Empire following the nation's defeat in World War I. This period corresponds to Germany's version of the Golden Twenties, an exciting and extremely vibrant time in the history of the German avant-garde and European history in general. This "fertile culture" of Berlin extended onwards until Adolf Hitler rose to power in early 1933 and stamped out any and all resistance to the Nazi Party, which was never very popular with many Berliners.
