Political animal (zoon politikon, ζῷον πoλιτικόν) is a term used by the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle in his Politics to refer to a human being.

In Hobbes's De Cive it reads "hominem esse animal aptum natum ad societatem," "man is an animal by nature fit for society."

It contrasts with the negative anthropology of "homo homini lupus."
