The chief authorities which have been consulted, are — the great work of M. Mazois on Pompeii ; the ' Museo Borbonico,' a periodical work now in course of publication at Naples ; Sir W. Gell's 'Pompeiana;' and Donaldson's ' Pompeii.' We have also had the advantage of numerous observations made on the spot by Mr. William Clarke, architect, by whom the materials for this work have been collected and the drawings made, either from the originals or from plates in the above works."--Pompeii, its History, Buildings and Antiquities (1867) by Thomas Henry Dyer
