Some things are meant to stay cult hits forever. Tumblr has been around for four years now and to my surprise only one Tumblr blog[1] has mentioned the sublime proto-surrealist Bizzarie di varie figure.
I found a whole set of Bizzarie di varie figure[2] (in an online version) today.
Plate 35 (shown above) is my favourite of the set.
Nude Photography: Masterpieces from the Past 150 Years by Peter-Cornell Richter has a full page photo of Christine Roux.
It also has this Femme couchée[3] by Atget.
The book A New Art: Photography in the 19th Century, edited by Mattie Boom and Hans Rooseboom has a good chapter on the 19th century photographic reproduction of paintings, known as photogravure. Photographic reproduction of art would eventually displace engravings. A big name in this nascent market was Adolphe Braun, who reproduced a collection of drawings by Albrecht Dürer, including his "Praying Hands"[4], also known as "Hands of the Apostle".
Braun produced albums of single artists (monographies) and whole collections of specific European museums.
