Germinie Lacerteux is a 1864 French novel by the Goncourt Brothers.

A naturalistic novel by the Goncourts which was scandalous in its time, and thus published in the U.S. by Ace Doubles and by Grove Press.

Zola's admiration

In the preface to Les frères Zemganno Zola notes:

"In my opinion " Germinie Lacerteux " is not of the order of canaille littéraire; it is a superb study of living, throbbing humanity (c'est de l'humanité saignante et superbe)." The_Experimental_Novel:_And_Other_Essays#.22LES_FRERES_ZEMGANNO..22

Ace edition

Ace publishers noted on the cover of their "complete and unabridged" English translation that this is "real origin" of Zola's Nana. The Ace double of this book was Paul Bourget's 'Un crime d'amour' (The Crime of Love).
