A register or roll of paper consisting of an enumeration or compilation of a set of possible items.
The mid 2000s saw the process of listmaking coming to the fore with titles such as the 1001 lists.
These kind of lists are the equivalent of a canon in academic curricula. Defining the boundaries of the canon is endless but attempts to make them are fun and conductive of the discussion regarding what constitutes cultural significance.
Frequently included criteria on this wiki is the cult qualifier as in cult movies, cult fiction. For music, the epithet cult is not used, instead underground is used, so underground music.
Alternatively these lists could be called "a bluffer's guide" to the best films, novels and albums, since they allow you to pretend you've experienced the real thing while you have not.
