"I'm devoted to the principle of originality" is a citation from an interview with John Cage in an interview with Roger Reynolds at the time of the publication of Silence.
- "I'm devoted to the principle of originality. Not originality in the egoistic sense, but originality in the sense of doing something which it is necessary to do. Now obviously, the things which it is necessary to do are not the things that have been done, but the ones that have not yet been done...; that is to say if I have done something, then I consider it my business not to do that but to find what must be done next."
