1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die (2006) is a literary reference book compiled by over one hundred literary critics worldwide and edited by Peter Boxall; with an introduction by Peter Ackroyd. The List

The list contains 1001 books but while generally approved has received criticism for overlisting certain authors like J.M. Coetzee (Ten Entries) and Ian McEwan (Eight Entries) while overlooking many such as Watership Down, The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter, and other "classics". One of the biggest protests of the list has been the exclusion of the Bible and the exclusion of Shakespeare despite the works of Shakespeare being plays and not novels.

The list is made up of novels, short stories, and short story collections; as well as one pamphlet (A Modest Proposal), and one book of collected text (Adjunct: An Undigest), and one graphic novel (Watchmen).

Notably absent from this list are
